Araqiel.

Araqiel is associated with the signs of the earth in the teaching list of 1 Enoch 8. The reference is short, but it supplies a specific textual basis for a name preserved in Angelicpedia’s older directory.

The terrestrial signs

In 1 Enoch 8:3, R. H. Charles’s translation attributes terrestrial signs to Araqiêl and solar signs to Shamsiêl. Other nearby names are associated with astrology, constellations, clouds and the moon. Araqiel’s part belongs to the passage’s account of harmful knowledge taught to humanity.

Charles prints the Araqiel-and-Shamsiel words within textual brackets. A reader comparing translations should notice that editorial feature rather than assume that every surviving witness has identical wording.

What the passage establishes

The reference establishes an association with signs of the earth. It does not name particular kinds of rocks, soil divination, earthquake prediction or a complete practice of geomancy. Those expanded descriptions may sound plausible, but they need evidence beyond this short phrase.

Likewise, comparison with the Arâkîba spelling in the leader list of chapter 6 is a textual question, not a correction that can be settled from an English resemblance alone. The resemblance between Araqiel and Arâkîba invites comparison, but Charles’s English translation alone cannot settle the relationship between the forms. The passage cited here attributes the signs of the earth to Araqiêl.
