Barquiel is the governor of the seventh daytime hour in the Ars Paulina. In Joseph H. Peterson’s transcription of Sloane MS 3825, that hour is named Hamarym.
Barquiel and the seventh hour
The passage assigns Barquiel ten chief dukes and one hundred lesser dukes, besides a larger body of servants. For practical use, it names five chief dukes and ten lesser ones, accompanied by 600 servants.
The named chief dukes are Abrasiel, Farmos, Nestorii, Manuel and Sagiel. Harmiel, Nastrus, Varmay and Tulmas begin the following lesser-duke list. The full hierarchy and the selected practical company are described separately.
An hourly office
Barquiel’s place in this text is defined by the daytime sequence. Bariel occupies its eleventh hour. Similar-sounding names in other traditions should be compared through their actual passages rather than used to replace this specific office.
