In angelological reference works, Gazardiel (also cited under variants such as Casardia or Gazardiya) is documented as an angelic supervisor connected with the east and the rising sun. In his 1863 sixth edition of the Dictionnaire infernal (printed page 299), Jacques Collin de Plancy describes Gazardiel as an angel who, according to the Talmud, presides over the East to ensure the sun rises, waking it if necessary. The entry labels this a Talmudic account but gives no tractate or passage; this is de Plancy’s report.
In A Dictionary of Angels, Gustav Davidson records Gazardiel as an eastern supervisor charged with receiving and carrying prayers, attributing this role to the Zohar. Davidson’s separate entry for Gezuriya (p. 124) describes a guardian ruling other angels, including Gazardiya. That entry does not present Gezuriya as another spelling of Gazardiel.
