Peniel is the place-name Jacob gives after his wrestling encounter in Genesis 32.
In the JPS 1917 translation of Genesis 32:25–32, a man wrestles with Jacob until daybreak. When Jacob asks his opponent’s name, the figure declines to give it.
Jacob then names the place Peniel, explaining that he has seen God face to face and survived. This entry follows the place-name within that biblical encounter.
