Temperance is the title of card XIV in Arthur Edward Waite’s The Pictorial Key to the Tarot.
The winged figure
Waite describes a winged angel with a solar sign on the forehead and a square and triangle on the breast. The figure pours the essences of life between chalices, with one foot on earth and one on water.
Although using masculine language, Waite calls the figure neither male nor female. His interpretation connects Temperance with combining and harmonising psychic and material natures.
