Azbogah is a spelling used in later angel dictionaries for a figure also called Azbuga. Davidson cross-refers Azbogah to Azbuga YHWH; Hugo Odeberg’s translation of 3 Enoch prints Azbuga in chapter 18:22.
Garments of life in 3 Enoch
The chapter places Azbuga among the great princes who know the mystery of the Throne of Glory. When the preceding prince sees him, he removes his crown and prostrates himself.
The passage explains the name through a future task: clothing the righteous and pious in garments and a cloak of life, in which they will live eternally. This clothing imagery belongs to the text’s account of heavenly life.
Names and editorial parallels
Odeberg’s commentary separately discusses occurrences of the name in prayers, amulets and other mystical writings, sometimes as a divine designation. Those editorial comparisons should be distinguished from Azbuga’s role in the main translation.
