Eremiel.

Eremiel is a great angel depicted in the pseudepigraphal Apocalypse of Zephaniah. In the surviving text (chapter 6), the visionary encounters an angelic guide whose countenance shines like the sun, wearing a golden girdle with feet resembling molten bronze. Overwhelmed by this radiant presence, the seer falls down in worship, mistaking the figure for God. Eremiel tells him not to worship, and identifies himself as the angel appointed over the abyss and Hades, where souls have remained held since the end of the Flood.

Eremiel subsequently instructs the seer about the underworld and clarifies the identity of a terrifying multi-formed apparition described earlier in the vision, identifying that fearsome entity as the accuser who indicts humanity before God. In later compilations such as Gustav Davidson’s A Dictionary of Angels, Eremiel is grouped alongside variant names like Jeremiel (found in 2 Esdras) and Remiel (in 1 Enoch). Davidson’s grouping is a useful comparison, but it does not establish that these names are interchangeable in every passage. This entry follows the Eremiel scene in the Apocalypse of Zephaniah.
