Lahash appears in Louis Ginzberg’s The Legends of the Jews, Volume 3, during the account of Moses’ approaching death. The English volume, translated by Paul Radin, describes Moses asking Israel to pray that he might enter the land.
Prayers intercepted and restored
In the narrative, the people’s cries rise toward the divine throne. A host of 184 myriads of angels, led by Zakun and Lahash, descends and snatches away the words of the supplicants so they cannot reach God.
Lahash then tries to restore the intercepted words to their place. When Samael learns of this, he binds Lahash with chains of fire and brings him before God. Lahash receives sixty blows of fire and is expelled from the inner chamber because he attempted to help Moses against God’s wish.
These details belong to the Moses-death story as Ginzberg presents it. The account gives Lahash a specific part in the conflict over Moses’ final prayers.
