Pravuil is an archangel and heavenly writing teacher in the Slavonic Enoch narrative, commonly called 2 Enoch. In chapters 22–23, he is summoned to bring books and writing materials to Enoch and to communicate knowledge about the created world.
The books and the writing reed
In 2 Enoch 22:10–11, as printed in The Forgotten Books of Eden, the Lord summons Pravuil, whose work concerns the deeds of the Lord. He is told to bring books from the storehouses and a reed for quick writing, then give them to Enoch.
The episode follows Enoch’s transformation and appearance before the Lord. Pravuil is therefore part of Enoch’s instruction in the heavenly realm, not a figure introduced through an earthly encounter or a list of personal guardian angels.
What Enoch is taught
Chapter 23 lists an extensive range of subjects: heaven, earth, sea, elements, celestial movements, seasons, time and human affairs. Pravuil then directs Enoch to write about human souls and their prepared places. The cited English version gives a total of three hundred and sixty-six books.
That number should be attributed to this edition rather than silently imposed on every recension of 2 Enoch. The same care applies to variant forms of the teacher’s name: comparing Pravuil with a Vretil or Vrevoil reading requires identifying the edition in which it appears. The directly checked narrative supports his role as Enoch’s instructor and a keeper of heavenly writings.
